Will the PreOrder Item be Worth Keeping?
Considering that items in this game are not Uber, do you believe that the preorder item will be worth keeping?
I for one expect that the item WILL be worth keeping. ANet has not let us down yet. One unique item that can't be traded or salvaged will not distroy the balance of the game. It will, however, make the people who supported this new startup company from the beginning feel appreciated. Since there is not that great a difference between items designed for level 20 characters and people will be passing items to their new characters anyway, what difference does it make if you are given A "Unique" for your first character? "Inheritance is a wonderful thing." |

Whether or not the item is worth keeping will have to do with its look, for me. I want it to look distinctly different from any other item that it's possible to find in the game. If it does, I'll definately keep it around as a souvenir.

I just hope it looks awsome. Wish they would show wepon's in town, ohh well.
As of wepons not being "uber". I know what they say and to some extent im sure they are right. But I found this holy staff with great damage, A % that my skills recharge faster . Witch seems pretty uber to me lol. Sinfear~ |

I just want to be able to salvage it. The inability to trade preorder items is killer - if it ends up being an item for a character of a different class than your own, you're basically just out an inventory space.
Peace, -CxE

I'm not sure but my guess would be that it would help for the first bit as you are put back to level 1, and may have a gold value to it. How much help will it be if you decide to build from scratch and can???t use an item till level 20? But as far as being useful for an extended period of time is doubtful.

Yes, I'm guessing it's going to be a super-awesome starter item, which will be almost but not quite entirely worthless by the time you reach level 12.
With any luck, it'll salvage for something you can use on your level 20 equipment... |

One iron ingot is more than a dead space in inventory. You can even sell it for a gold piece!
I really have no idea why they want to make these items customized and untradable. What's the harm in letting people do whatever they want with their preorder item? If I have a guildie who could make better use of my preorder item, then I'd hand it over without a second thought. As is the preorder items are going to be dead to a whole lot of characters (since they are *all* class specific) - and putting an unsuable, untradable item in the inventories of 2/3 of made characters, and calling it a 'bonus', is downright insulting. Empty inventory slots have more value. Peace, -CxE

lol, wow... I sense some bitterness... but I can't say that I disagree.
I've never been too keen on the whole Customizing issue anyways. Well, I like the idea, but if Customization costs 1 gold... I think there's room for DE-Customization for... even 100 gold, although that could send some prices of weapons way up, to compesate. Often, in the beginning of the game, you trade for a decent weapon and then eventually get a better one... however, you can't put that item back into the hands of other new players because of customization... perhaps that's the point, however...

That's devestating to hear that the Pre-Order items can not be traded. I had only seen tidbits of information on them through the Guild Wars site. I preordered mine through Best Buy, so I got the Kanthan Targe, which doesn't help me a whole lot considering I'll be playing a Ranger/Monk. I convinced my friend to go to EB Games and buy it there so he would get the bow, and I even drove him the 40 minutes to get to the closest store there was...
I guess I'll just find a decent sword, set that and the Targe to F2, and switch my weapons every now and then |

In all fairness, you might not want to totally count out ALL the other character combonations just yet... I mean, are you ONLY going to EVER play a Ranger/Monk? Probably not... well, I hope not.
So while you can't use it for your Ranger/Monk, maybe you can create a character that CAN use it and maybe you'll have fun with it later... who knows.

The Items Given!
They give you a great item to start with and you can't trade it!... In game time experience, these would be like the shotgun, or the flintlock, or Claymore sword that has been hand down from generation to generation. Would you want to trade that item away?... Never. That is the way to look at the "Item Given", they don't have to do this great thing for us... It's just the the wiping of Guilds... if they decide to do this then it's fair for all.
I for one do not care how a weapon looks, especially a "Given" weapon if it works best... then I'm using the hell out of it. Oh, and it's the same for salvaging the weapon... even an heirloom you do not salvage... you keep it around. Like the Civil War weapon of my Great Grandfather, I keep it around... though I can never use it. Even if it takes one slot of space... so what, it's reminds me of what it took to get to the top. You can throw yours away if you want, I'm keepin' mine! I would like to think of the weapons or "Items Given" as the weopons of the Elite or Honor Guard of the High King... would you truely want to throw them away. Peace. |

It's not bitterness - I really don't care. If I get a useless brick of a 'bonus' item, it'll just get sold, salvaged, or otherwise trashed as soon as I need the space - which would be within the first 15 minutes of gameplay, I'd think. It isn't like I preordered from the 'wrong' store or anything - my main character is an Elementalist/Mesmer, all of the preorder items are useless.
Why would I want to trade something that is useless to me, and will always be useless to me, away? Maybe because I'm a rationalist. Hey, if you want to 'roleplay' or whatever and lug a brick around because it makes you feel special or whatever, go for it! Whatever you find fun. Myself, I place a fairly high premium on *every* inventory space I have, and every single item I hold has to pull its financial weight. An unusable, untradable, useless item? Sounds like a brick to me. I just find it funny that they're using these bonus items as a promotional tool or whatever, and people are going to be sorely disappointed when they find out they're little more than walking advertisements. Also, I'm opposed to de-customizing items. The whole point of customization is that it helps pull top notch items out of the game - no more hand me downs. If you could de-customize the good stuff would just continue to build up as it passes between users. It's an economic sink, and an unobtrusive one at that. No way they should get rid of it. If anything they should expand it to shields and foci, too. Peace, -CxE

I love my Ranger Warrior build. he is bad a$$ with a bow or an axe... Add to that my Playful lynx and my ranger is one bad mother... True I'm lacking a resurect and group healing... but I'm trying to aquire a signat to help me with that. I have charms and necklaces but I have to keep reapplying them currently... Right? Should be an easy thing once we get a muling function hopefully in our guilds... Like a chest or something like that...
My hopes is that the special item bow I get with my preorder will not be too overpowering, but maybe have a special look to it or something like that. Or maybe an ability, like continuous fire arrows... something special like that. If so it will be well worth the precious slot on the inventory bar. Ingram of Haz |
